Baseball Bashes Pios for DH Sweep

TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University baseball team extended its win streak to six on Saturday afternoon, collecting a pair of 13-3 mercy rule wins at the expense of Northwest Conference rival Lewis & Clark College.

The Lutes (16-9, 12-5 NWC) wasted little time getting on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Andy Schmitz belted a leadoff double before Austin Gormley hit a single. Jordan Haworth drew a walk to load the bases followed by Cole Trotignon blasting a bases clearing double with no outs. A sacrifice fly by Tori Doten scored Trotignon later in the frame, building a 4-0 advantage after one inning of play.

PLU continued piling on the runs in the second with a Connor Lemma sac fly scoring Schmitz before an Ashton Barton double down the line plated two more.

The Pioneers (7-15, 7-15 NWC) got on the board in the top of the third inning, bringing in three on a two-out rally, closing the gap to 7-3. PLU padded its lead with a pair of runs in the third, including one off an RBI-double from Gormley.

A Jordan Haworth triple in the fifth scored two more runs with Haworth eventually coming home on a wild pitch, pushing the Lute lead to 12-3. Ashton Barton extended the PLU lead to 10 in the bottom of the sixth, scoring on a wild pitch.

Reliever Spencer Howell tossed a scoreless seventh, giving the Lutes the 13-3 mercy rule win.

Tommy Snyder tallied the win, striking out seven in six innings of work and allowing just one earned run.

The Lutes had a big effort from the top of the order with Schmitz and Gormley both going four-for-five at the plate with three runs scored. Trotignon drove in three runs and scored two more as the Lutes pounded out 15 hits in the opener.

Pacific Lutheran continued where it left off in game two, piling on a pair of runs in the bottom of the first courtesy of a Trotignon home run to center field.

Lewis & Clark answered with a run of its own in the top of the third but the Lutes would respond in kind in the bottom of the frame with a Trotignon sac fly scoring Schmitz before a Connor Lemma single to left field scored two.

A Gormley double extended the Lute lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth before Trotignon went yard for the second time of the game, clearing the left center field fence and bringing in two more.

The Pios plated two more in the top of the fifth while Tori Doten scored in the bottom of the fifth on a wild pitch after getting on base via a triple to center field.

Connor Lemma knocked in two runs in the sixth, a Cody Bentley sac fly scored another, while a Garrett Wong double delivered the knockout punch, scoring Sean Kauffman to enact the mercy rule in a 13-3 win.

Trotignon finished the nightcap three-for-three at the plate, driving in five runs and scoring three. Lemma was also three-for-three with four RBIs while Gormley was three-for-three with four runs scored.

Justin Tucker collected the win, striking out four in 4 2/3 innings of work while Alex Gregory recorded the final four outs, striking out two.

The Lutes and Pioneers continue their series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
