Baseball Earns Sweep of Pios

TACOMA, Wash. - Garrett Wong hit a walkoff double in the opener while a two-inning power surge proved more than enough in the nightcap as the Pacific Lutheran University baseball team extended its win streak to eight on Sunday, earning a doubleheader sweep of Northwest Conference rival Lewis & Clark College. The Lutes etched out a 4-3 win in the opening game of the day before collecting the 8-4 victory in the series finale.

In the opener, the Lutes (18-9, 14-5 NWC) manufactured the game's first run in the bottom of the fourth. Jordan Haworth led off the frame by advancing to first on a hit by pitch. Haworth advanced to second on a wild pitch and onto third on a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt before scoring on a RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Connor Lemma.

The Pioneers (7-17, 7-17 NWC) got on the board in the fifth inning, drawing a bases loaded walk to knot the score at 1-1.

Pacific Lutheran pulled ahead in the sixth, getting an RBI single from Lemma to score Haworth before an Armond Swanson III double plated Lemma for the 3-1 lead. That lead evaporated in the eighth with Lewis & Clark pushing across two runs to tie the game.

Garrett Wong emerged as the hero in the bottom of the ninth, belting a walkoff double to right center field, scoring pinch runner Noah Claxton Ward for the 4-3 victory.

Lemma led the Lutes at the plate with a pair of RBIs while Haworth scored two runs in a game PLU was outhit 7-5.

Spencer Howell picked up the win, tossing the final 1 1/3 innings, allowing no hits and delivering two strikeouts. Cole Trotignon had the start, going 4 1/3 innings and collecting four punchouts before Alex Gregory went 2 2/3 innings of shutout ball.

PLU struck first in the nightcap with Sean Kauffman scoring on a passed ball in the bottom of the second. A Trotignon RBI groundout brought home Gormley in the third, giving the Lutes the 2-0 advantage.

Trotignon was at it again in the fifth, blasting a two-run home run over the left field fence to double the Lute lead to 4-0.

The Pios answered with a two-run shot of their own in the sixth but the Lutes padded their lead again in the bottom of the frame with a Tori Doten single scoring Sean Kauffman and a three-run home run from Gormley to build a comfortable 8-2 buffer.

L&C had a solo home run in the seventh and brought in another run but it was too little, too late, as the Lutes swept their second straight NWC series.

Gormley finished the series finale two-for-four with three RBIs and three runs scored while Haworth and Doten both finished with a pair of base knocks.

Jonathan Cohen collected his second win of the season, tossing the opening five innings and striking out four. Noah Ferguson closed out the game, pitching the final two frames and striking out two to collect his second save of the year.

The Lutes return to the diamond on Saturday, trekking across the Cascades to face Whitworth University in a four-game series.
