SPOKANE, Wash. – Entering the weekend on an eight-game winning streak, the Pacific Lutheran University baseball team lost both games to Whitworth University on Saturday. The Lutes dropped Game 1, 11-7, before falling in Game 2, 10-7.
Game 1
The Lutes jumped all over the Pirates with four runs in the first inning, but the PLU staff was unable to hold the advantage in a 11-7 defeat to open the four-game set. Whitworth scored in six of its eight times at bat and produced 16 hits in the victory.
Jordan Haworth hit his 10
th homer of the season to get PLU on the scoreboard in the first with a two-run blast. The next batter
Cole Trotignon singled and
Sean Kauffman was hit by a pitch before
Ashton Barton hit a double to left center to score them.
The Lutes scored again in the fifth, but missed a golden opportunity to put up a crooked number. Haworth doubled, Trotignon walked and
Connor Lemma had an infield single to start the inning. Kauffman grounded into a double play, which scored Haworth and Barton flied out for the final out of the inning.
Down to their final out,
Armond Swanson III doubled to score Haworth and Gormley, but it was too late to mount a comeback.
Andy Schmitz had three hits from his leadoff spot and
Alex Boyd had three base hits from the nine hole. Haworth was 2-for-3 with two walks, two RBI and three runs scored, and Trotignon was 2-for-4 with a walk and a run.
Spencer Howell took the loss for PLU after allowing three runs and recorded four outs.
Tommy Snyder struggled in his start, allowing three runs and six hits in 2.2 innings.
Alex Gregory also was touched up, allowing five runs in 3.1 innings.
Game 2
PLU scored first again in the nightcap, but for the second straight game was unable to hold a 4-0 lead.
Cody Bentley's leadoff home run in the second inning highlighted the Lutes early blitz.
Whitworth scored three times in the second and five more times in the fourth to take an 8-4 edge. The Lutes pulled back within one run in the next half inning. With two outs in the fifth, Bentley went deep for the second time in the game and scored Trotignon and Haworth.
That would be as close as PLU would get as the Pirates added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning.
Lute starter
Justin Tucker was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs, four earned, in 3.1 innings pitched.
Noah Ferguson relieved him and fared no better, allowing five earned in just 2.2 innings.
Bentley was 3-for-4 with two homers and four RBI, while Trotignon and Boyd both went 2-for-3.
The Lutes will look to return to their winning ways tomorrow when they play Whitworth two more times beginning at 12:00 p.m.
