TACOMA, Wash. – After splitting a pair of games yesterday, the Pacific Lutheran University and Lewis & Clark College softball teams were each victorious again on Sunday. The Lutes took Game 1 by a 3-2 score for the second consecutive day, but were unable to come away with the series win in Game 2, losing 5-2.
Game 1
Trailing 1-0 after three innings, the Lute offense came alive late, hitting solo home runs in the fourth fifth and sixth innings en route to a 3-2 victory.
Erin McGrath was the star at the plate, getting the Lutes on the board in the fourth inning with a smash to left center field. After a
Mikayla Chun long ball in the fifth, McGrath went deep again in the sixth with a shot to center. The two home runs push her total to 10 on the season.
In the circle,
Kennedy Robillard was masterful, holding the Pioneers to just two runs on four hits. The senior struck out eight batters and didn't surrender a walk in her fifth victory over the season.
Game 2
The Pioneers struck early in the second game of the double dip when Samantha Gildersleeve hit a two-run homer in the top of the first. PLU cut the advantage in half in the second as they manufactured a run.
Cailey Collado singled to start the inning, stole second, was bunted to third by
Anna Foster, and scored on a wild pitch.
Lewis & Clark scored three more times in the fourth off of starter
Z Ellis (4-5) before junior
Marley Dyer could cool down the Pioneer attack. Dyer did not allow a hit over the final three innings pitched and struck out a pair batters.
After a solo blast from
Sarah Potwin in the fourth inning, the Lute lineup was held in check the rest of the way despite having runners in scoring position in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Chaella Galapon had a pair of hits and
Kamryn Adkins came through with a pinch-hit double.
Next Up
PLU will head to Forest Grove, Ore. next weekend for a four-game series with Pacific University. The Lutes and the Boxers split a non-conference doubleheader earlier this spring.
