Box Score 2 FOREST GROVE, Ore. – With just six outs to work with and trailing by two runs, the Pacific Lutheran University softball team had some clutch hits down the stretch, none bigger than
Erin McGrath's two-run single in the seventh inning to beat Pacific University 3-2 in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday evening. The Lutes were unable to keep the momentum going in Game 2, falling by a 4-1 score.
Game 1
Trailing 2-0 entering the sixth inning, the Lute lineup finally got things on track against Pacific reliever Cheyenne Datan. With two outs and
Cailey Collado on first,
Casey Wright got PLU on the scoreboard with a double to right field.
After senior pitcher
Kennedy Robillard tossed a perfect bottom half,
Taylor Shigeta worked a leadoff walk.
Shanelle Lum tried unsuccessfully to bunt her into scoring position, but
Chaella Galapon smacked a base hit to center to put runners on first and second with one out. Collado moved the runners up a bag with a groundout to the shortstop to set the stage for McGrath's game-winning, two-run single to right center field.
Robillard put down the Boxers 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to secure her third consecutive victory and sixth win of the season. The senior hurler retired the final 11 batters she faced.
Boxer starter Allie Hancock did not receive a decision despite shutting out the Lutes over the first five innings.
Game 2
The nightcap followed nearly the same script as Game 1, but the Lutes were unable to complete the comeback. PLU trailed 2-0 after five innings of action and it was Wright that came through again in the sixth with a solo home run.
Unfortunately, that's where the symmetry ended as Pacific added two insurance runs in the bottom of the inning and the visitors came up empty in the top of the seventh, despite a leadoff single by
Taylor Shigeta. Shigeta was 2-for-2 at the plate after entering the game in the fifth.
The Lutes (11-19, 8-14 NWC) and the Boxers (14-16, 9-11 NWC) will run things back tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
