TACOMA, Wash. - The Pacific Lutheran University baseball team closed out the regular season in style on Sunday, earning a doubleheader sweep of Linfield University. The Northwest Conference Tournament bound Lutes rallied for the 12-5 win in the opener before getting a complete game effort from
Jonathan Cohen in a 5-0 shutout in the nightcap.
Piling on 10 runs over the final three innings was more than enough to take the opening game of the day 12-5.
The host Wildcats (10-27, 8-21 NWC) drew first blood, scoring a run in the bottom of the first before a
Kenton Robillard single to right field scored
Ashton Barton in the second. A Linfield fielding error gave the Lutes (25-15, 21-10 NWC) a 2-1 edge in the fifth before the Cats answered with a pair of runs in the sixth to reclaim the lead.
In the seventh, an
Ashton Barton double scored
Austin Gormley before a Conner Lemma single plated Barton and
Cole Trotignon to take a 5-3 advantage.
Jordan Haworth and Trotignon both drove in a run in the eighth before the Lutes padded the lead even more with five runs in the ninth. A Robillard sacrifice bunt brought in the opening run before an
Andy Schmitz single brought in another. Haworth capped off the scoring, belting a three-RBI home run to left field in the 12-5 victory.
PLU pounded out 14 hits in the game with Schmitz going three-for-five with three runs scored. Trotignon was also three-for-fove while Haworth finished with four RBIs.
Spencer Howell got the start on the hill, striking out three in 4 1/3 innings.
Noah Ferguson tallied two punchouts in one inning of work while ALex Gregory tallied the win, striking out three in 2 2/3 innings of action.
PLU continued where it left off in game two with Haworth belting a two-run home run in the top of the first.
Sean Kauffman made it 4-0 with a single in the fourth inning, scoring two before a Schmitz single in the sixth scored Kauffman for a 5-0 advantage.
Gormley and
Alex Boyd both finished game two with a pair of hits while seven total Lutes had a base knock.
On the mound,
Jonathan Cohen went the distance, allowing just two hits and striking out three in the complete game effort.
The Lutes head into the 2021 NWC Tournament as the No. 2 seed and will open the double-elimination event on Thursday in Forest Grove, Oregon against third-seeded Willamette University.
