TACOMA, Wash. – Ranked 25
th in the country, the Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team put forth another dominating effort on Sunday at East Field as they handily beat Whitman College, 3-0.
Senior
Vivian Shinall banged in the opening goal of the game in the 30
th minute off of a corner kick by junior
Ellie Reardon. Just 94 seconds before halftime,
Julia Causbie served the ball directly into the box to Shinall, who played it perfectly to freshman
Hannah Cecil, and Cecil finished it for a beautiful goal and a 2-0 lead.
The Lutes didn't rest in the second half as Reardon drilled a corner kick to Causbie at the top of the box. Causbie knocked the ball down and fired a bullet past a diving Blue keeper for the final tally.
The Lutes possessed the ball for nearly 70 percent of the 90 minutes on Sunday. By controlling the ball for the majority of the match, PLU held the Blues to just one shot in each half and just one shot on goal. The home team had 21 shot opportunities and nine corner kicks.
Eva Wirth made one save in the first half, and
Calie Rose did not face a shot on net as the two combined to blank the Blues. In total, 25 Lutes saw action in the match.
It was the fourth consecutive shutout for the PLU defense as they have allowed just one goal in six victories to start the season. The Lutes have scored 17 goals themselves and sit at the top of the Northwest Conference standings with six points after the opening weekend.
PLU will hit the road next weekend and take on Linfield University on Saturday and Lewis & Clark College on Sunday. Both kickoffs are scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
