COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team ran into its toughest competition of the season on Monday afternoon. Ranked 25
th in the country to start the season, Gustavus Adolphus College scored the first three goals of the match en route to a 3-1 victory over the Lutes on the campus of Colorado College.
"We played well and Gustavus Adolphus is a good team," said PLU Head Coach
John Yorke. "We need to manage the details inside the boxes better. All three goals we gave up came from lack of detail."
Sophomore defender
Cole Dobson scored his first career goal as the Lutes tried to mount a comeback. In the 68
th minute,
Craig Johnson blasted a corner kick into the box, that Dobson leaped and headed into the back of the net. It was the second corner kick the Lutes have headed In this season as
Alex White scored in similar fashion in the season-opener.
"We have made better service of the ball an emphasis, and we are getting better each game with it," said Yorke.
PLU (2-1-0) was unable to take advantage of a 14-12 edge in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
Dane Helle led the team with three shots on goal, while
Robby Guyer also had three attempts.
Matt Gibbons put the Gusties up early when he scored in the 18
th minute. He also added an assist on Owen Johnson's goal early on in the second half. Gustavus scored twice in a 10-minute span in the second half as Raphael Cattelin made the score 3-0 in the 64
th minute.
The Lutes return to the pitch on Wednesday when they host NAIA foe Multnomah University at 7:00 p.m. at East Field.
