Men’s Soccer Explodes Past Multnomah in Second Half

TACOMA, Wash. – On a gorgeous evening in Tacoma, the Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team provided plenty of fireworks for the home fans in a 5-0 rout of visiting Multnomah University.

Craig Johnson opened the scoring in the 14th minute on a ball from Archie Caldwell.  The Lutes ripped 13 shots in the first half and had a number of missed opportunities, but still lead 1-0 at the halftime break.

In the second half though, PLU found the back of the net with ease.  Brandt Kelly scored twice in the first five minutes of the onslaught for his third and fourth goals of the young season.  Fellow sophomore Ayden Lawes assisted on both of Kelly's goals.

Sammy Tafolla added a fourth goal in the 53rd minute and Mason Gribble put the finishing touches on the effort with his first career tally in the 88th minute.

Nicholas Gaston made two saves in the first half, while Lucas Hempen made one in the second as the duo combined to turn in the clean sheet.

Johnson led the team with five shot attempts on the night as the Lutes outshot the Lions 21-8 on the night and 11-3 in attempts on goal.

PLU (3-1) will embark on a four-game road trip on Friday when they take on Warner Pacific University for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
