TACOMA, Wash. – The Pacific Lutheran men's soccer team knows how to score goals.
And they score a lot of them.
On Saturday in a 5-1 win against Pacific at East Field, the Lutes showcased the depth of their attack getting goals from four different players and assists from three more.
It was a complete team effort as PLU won its fifth consecutive game.
"It was a great team win. I feel like the starters really got it going in the first half," said
Archie Caldwell, who had a goal, "and everyone who came off the bench put in a good shift and got the job done."
The win combined with Willamette's 3-1 loss to Whitman on Saturday puts the Lutes back in control of their own destiny for a potential fifth consecutive league title.
PLU (12-2-0 overall, 6-2-0 NWC) host George Fox at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at East Field.
"We played really well, especially in the first half," PLU coach
John Yorke said. "Once the game got a little more in our direction we weren't quite as sharp, but I thought we were really good in the first half.
"We had a great start, good movement, some nice goals and passes – we had a good week of training and it carried over."
Craig Johnson opened the scoring in the 10
th minute, scoring off an assist from Robbie Guyer. After Pacific (1-9-3, 0-6-2) tied it at 1-1 in the 12
th minute on a goal by Tait Kuchenbrod, the Lutes didn't take long to retake the lead.
Cris Lozano scored off another assist by Guyer in the 17
th minute, while Caldwell bagged his goal on a pass from
Christian Pineda in the 35
th minute.
Brandt Kelly scored his third goal of the season less than three minutes later off an assist by
Jordan Ross.
Lozano earned a brace in the 71
st minute on an assist by Johnson.
Lozano, Johnson and
Trevor Thompson are all tied for the team lead in goals with eight.
"With this team, if Trevor is on a streak and you try to take him away then Craig starts scoring," Yorke said. "You try to take Craig away and Cris will score. To see Archie and Brandt chipping in goals as well, yeah, we are getting there at the right time."
It's an embarrassment of riches that the Lutes offense has this season. They've now scored 41 goals, which puts them solidly in the top 10 in the country.
And it feels like things are just getting started for PLU, which is certainly hitting its stride at the right time.
"I think we've found our groove," Caldwell said. "First game of the second half of the season and we get a win. I think we have a good shot at winning conference."
