TACOMA, Wash. – Stop if you've seen this scoreline before: 5-1.
The Pacific Lutheran men's soccer team won its second consecutive Northwest Conference game 5-1 on Sunday, defeating visiting George Fox at East Field.
But it was who scored the goals that may raise an eyebrow or two.
The Lutes (13-2-0 overall, 7-2-0 NWC) got huge contributions from their bench Sunday, as reserves scored the first three goals to help erase an early 1-0 deficit.
"We made eight subs before the half and those guys played really well," PLU coach John Yorke said. "(George Fox) didn't play (Saturday), we're tired, it's 80 degrees in October and on a day like that, we needed our guys off the bench to be good for us.
"They've trained in that group all week and have been scoring goals and it is great to see them do it in a game."
The Lutes trailed 1-0 after a Eugene Peltier goal in the 21st minute for the Bruins (2-8-3, 0-5-3). PLU looked a tad listless as though the late season heat and wildfire smoke had sapped them of energy.
But then on came the reinforcements.
Keeton Heggerness, James Del Carmen, Archie Caldwell, Brandt Kelly, Jordan Ross, Joe Camp, Sam Erickson and Jared Dubinsky all came on in the first half and had an immediate impact.
Caldwell scored off an assist from Craig Johnson in the 35th minute to tie the game and then Camp scored his second career goal – and first of the season – in the 44th minute off an assist from Dubinsky.
"We wanted to try and pick things up a little bit," Camp said. "We had a bit of a slow start, so we wanted to provide a little energy to the boys."
They did just that, completely flipping the game on its head.
Caldwell remained in the game to start the second half and recorded his second goal – and third of the weekend – in the 47th minute off a pass by Trevor Thompson.
"We were all motivated," Camp said. "We wanted to go out there and perform and show that we feel like we deserve to be playing as much as possible."
Robbie Guyer added the final two goals, scoring in the 54th minute on an assist by Ryan Griffith and in the 61st minute on Johnson's second assist.
Nicholas Gaston made four saves in goal to earn the victory.
But it was the play of the bench guys who won the day.
"It is super important to have depth," Camp said. "It allows us to play our starters and whenever they are tired or need a break, it won't drop the level. If anything, it will hopefully raise it and inspire everybody else."
That is certainly what the second unit did Sunday.
The Lutes travel to Whitman at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The Blues defeated PLU 2-1 earlier this season.
