Pair of late goals by Causbie leads women's soccer to win

SPOKANE, Wash. — Julia Causbie found the back of the net with less than 10 minutes remaining Sunday to help give the Pacific Lutheran women's soccer team a 1-0 win against Whitworth in Northwest Conference action.

Causbie scored the game-winner in the 82nd minute, capitalizing on a poor clearance and slotting the ball home in the bottom left corner for a 1-0 lead.

Less than five minutes later, Causbie again stole a failed clearance and scored an open netter this time.

They were her fifth and sixth goals of the season.

"Shoutout to Julia," PLU coach Seth Spidahl said. "She was optimistic up front and took her two chances. We kind of had to move some things around today and adjust."

It was the third consecutive win for the Lutes (8-1-1 overall, 5-1-0 NWC), who host George Fox at 12 p.m. Saturday at East Field.

On Sunday, the Lutes outshot the Pirates 19-8, including 8-1 on goal. Shaylin Cesar saved the one Whitworth (1-6-2, 1-4-1) shot to earn the victory.

"It was a really tough game today," Spidahl said. "Credit to Whitworth. Their system is difficult to play against and it took us awhile to settle in and get it sorted. We definitely were defending a lot in the first part of the first half.

"But we kind of grew into the game, which is a credit to the players. They did a great job of adapting. We are delighted, obviously, to come away (from this trip) with six points."
