Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Craig Craker, Assistant Director of Sports Communications

Five players, five goals as men's soccer rolls

TACOMA, Wash. – The Pacific Lutheran men's soccer team took a while to wake up Sunday, but when they did they dominated.

The Lutes defeated Lewis & Clark College 5-1 in a nonconference match at East Field, scoring four times in a 15-minute span in the second half.

"What I think we should take out of this is that we should work hard and keep our standard high and play to our level, instead of what our opponent's level is," Jared Dubinsky said. "We need to work on that and keep it up and hopefully continue it into next weekend."

Craig Johnson scored in the 19th minute on a pass from Robby Guyer and it seemed like the Lutes might overwhelm a Pioneers program that is in its first year of existence and only had 16 players suited up.

But Pacific Lutheran struggled to finish and Lewis & Clark (0-4-0 overall) tied the game in the 63rd minute.

Coach John Yorke immediately had his starters start warming up on the sideline to prepare to re-enter the game. While the game doesn't count in the Northwest Conference standings, it does count as an NCAA Division III game and a win would help the Lutes (11-2-0) in their bid to reach the national tournament again.

"We didn't do it, but what we were trying to accomplish every time is having a standard to get better," Yorke said. "The focus today was to be better than Friday night and we didn't achieve that. They showed a bit of a lack of maturity in how we approached the game, but hopefully as we move on we can learn a lesson from today."

The Lutes backups helped the team move on almost immediately, as Dubinsky scored a golazo from distance for his first collegiate goal in the 67th minute on an assist by Christian Pineda.

"I had a lot of time in the middle of the field and I took my first touch and came across and no one was stepping to me," Dubinsky said. "I thought, 'Why not? I've got time and space.' So, I let it rip.

"It was honestly a great feeling. It was my first collegiate goal and it is always fun to have that satisfaction to score and go celebrate with your team."

Defender Alex White then scored on a header off a pass from Elijah Thompson in the 67th minute, Pineda then recorded a penalty kick goal in the 71st and Jon Tolo added a PK goal in the 80th.

"It's a great weekend," Yorke said of his team's two wins. "I'd rather win not playing our best than losing playing great.

"I will take two wins on the weekend and move forward on that. Winning is a habit and we are building a habit of winning."

The Lutes are back in action at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, hosting Pacific at East Field.
