LOS ANGELES – The Pacific Lutheran University women's basketball team took the court for the first time in 11 days on Thursday afternoon when they took on Occidental. The Lutes put together a fierce fourth-quarter comeback, but it wasn't enough as the Tigers held on for a narrow 49-46 victory.
The Lutes suffered from a slow start against the Tigers on Thursday afternoon. The Tigers made their move in the second quarter, going on a 16-8 run over those 10 minutes. During the period, the Lutes shot just 14.29 percent (4-for-15) from the field and didn't make a 3-pointer in the first half. That changed suddenly in the second half.
The Lutes cut into the Tigers' lead in the third quarter. Ava Edmonds took over, scoring five points on back-to-back trips down the floor. The short-run from Edmonds and the Lutes cut the Oxy lead to 29-21 with 7:26 to play in the quarter. Momentum swung its way back to the Tigers, as they'd close out the third quarter with a 39-29 lead.
After a 3-pointer from the Tigers, the Lutes trailed 42-30 with 8:45 to play. Sydney Reisner knocked down a layup, followed by two free throws from Edmonds. The run continued, as Emi Wada attacked the basket for a layup. A jumper from Edmonds brought the score to 42-38 with 6:10 left.
The Tigers held onto a slim lead throughout the fourth quarter before the Lutes put together one last run. The Lutes trailed 46-41 and fouled the Tigers to send them to the free throw line. They missed both, as Reisner pulled down a clutch rebound.
A timeout from the Lutes was followed by a layup from Wada. The Lutes were within one possession of the Tigers with 0:31 on the clock. After two made free throws from the Tigers, Edmonds drilled a 3-pointer to bring the Lutes to within two. PLU fouled quickly, leading to split free throws from the Tigers. Reisner got a clean look from the top of the key to tie the game, but it didn't fall.
Edmonds was dominant for the Lutes, notching her first double-double of the season. She led all scorers with 19 points on an excellent 7-for-13 shooting performance. She also led the game in rebounds, pulling down 12.
Reisner was the only other Lute in double-figure scoring, as she finished with 10 points. Ashley Akamine had a nice night, scoring seven points while grabbing seven rebounds.
The Lutes are back on Sunday as they visit Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks, Calif. for a game that tips off at 2 p.m.
