Baseball Bounces Boxers for Series Win

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – It took 11 innings on Sunday, but the Pacific Lutheran University baseball team scored a huge series win to begin the Northwest Conference schedule.  After splitting a doubleheader yesterday, the Lutes took the series over Pacific University with a 4-3 victory over the Boxers, who are ranked 18th in the country and were picked to win the league in the preseason.

"It was a very exciting game and a big win," said PLU Skipper Nolan Soete.  "Pacific is a very good team and it was definitely a battle today.  Our guys played well under pressure.  Ferguson and Gregory were excellent out of the pen.  We played good defense and had some timely hitting.  Haworth had a lot of quality at-bats and Ashton Barton had a huge hit in the 11th to put us ahead for good.  Overall, it was a great team win."

To start the 11th, Andy Schmitz walked, but after Tori Doten popped up, and Jordan Haworth grounded into a fielder's choice, the visitors had Haworth at first with two away.  Cole Trotignon singled up the middle to put runners at the corners and Ashton Barton came through with a base hit to put the Lutes up 4-3.

Alex Gregory (1-0) sent the home team down 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the inning to pick up his first win of the season.  Gregory was masterful out of the bullpen, getting the final 13 outs of the game and allowing just three hits and no runs.  The trio of starter Jonathan Cohen, Noah Ferguson and Gregory fanned 12 Pacific batters on the day, including five each by Ferguson and Gregory.  Cohen gave up two runs in the second inning, before being pulled in the fourth for Ferguson.

Trailing 2-0 in the third, PLU halved the Pacific edge on a RBI single by Haworth.  The Lutes added two more in the fifth as Doten tripled in Schmitz and Haworth knocked in the senior shortstop in the next at-bat to give PLU a 3-2 lead.  In the seventh, Pacific scored an unearned run off of Ferguson to knot the score.

Schmitz had three hits and a walk out of the leadoff spot and Haworth also had three hits and a pair of RBI.  Trotignon added two safeties for the Lutes, who outhit Pacific 13-11 on the afternoon.

Another big series looms for the Lutes next weekend when they host Willamette University.  The Bearcats were picked to finish second in the NWC preseason poll, just one spot ahead of the Lutes.  The doubleheader on Saturday will begin at 11:00 a.m.
