Lutes Dethrone #20 Kingsmen in Cali Opener

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Tommy Snyder and Noah Ferguson struck out 10 and Cole Trotignon drove in three runs as the Pacific Lutheran University baseball team opened its tour of the Golden State by unseating 20th-ranked California Lutheran University 4-2 on Thursday at Ullman Stadium.

Snyder, the reigning Northwest Conference Pitcher of the Week, continued to impress, securing the win on the hill after dealing 7 2/3 innings and striking out seven. Ferguson took the baton midway through the eighth and sealed the game, facing just five batters and recording four outs, including three via strikeout to collect the save.

The game was scoreless until the top of the third with an Andy Schmitz double to right center field scoring Lukas Delisle who had reached base on a single before advancing to second on a passed ball. Cole Trotignon added to the Lute advantage, reaching base on a Kingsmen fielding error that allowed Schmitz to score for the 2-0 lead.

The Lutes' (10-5) doubled their lead in the fifth with a Trotignon single scoring both Schmitz and Delisle. Delisle led off the fifth with a single down the left field line before Schmitz singled up the middle. The nationally-ranked Kingsmen (12-3) broke up the shutout in the bottom of the sixth, manufacturing two runs but were unable to come any closer as Snyder and Ferguson kept Cal Lu at bay to secure the win.

Schmitz, Delisle, and Ashton Barton all finished two-for-four to pace the Lutes while Trotignon was one-for-four with a trio of RBIs.

"Snyder was excellent today. He had command of everything and did a great job keeping them off balance all day," said Head Coach Nolan Soete.

"Ferguson was electric out of the pen and we had some big at bats from Trotignon, Schmitz, and Delisle. Overall, it was a great team effort."

The Lutes and Kingsmen finish off their two-game series tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
