PORTLAND, Ore. - Chaella Galapon and
Molly House both went deep while
Emma Ware earned a win and a save inside the circle, powering the Pacific Lutheran University softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Northwest Conference rival Lewis & Clark College. The Lutes rallied to the 3-2 win in the opener before earning the 5-3 victory in the nightcap to extend the PLU win streak to four games.
In the opener, the host Pioneers (6-8, 3-6 NWC) took and early lead after scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. The Lutes' offense came alive in the fifth, with
Kamryn Adkins belting a leadoff double.
Cailey Collado would enter as a pinch runner, scoring on a
Brooke Tilson base hit. Galapon would put the Lutes in the driver's seat the next at bat, blasting a two run home run to give PLU (16-8, 8-4 NWC) the 3-2 advantage.
Emma Ware earned the win by tossing five scoreless innings of relief and allowing just three hits and no walks. Offensively, Tilson led the Lutes, going two-for-three with an RBI and one run scored.
Pacific Lutheran jumped to an early 2-0 lead with
Molly House belting a home run to left field, scoring
Erin McGrath. Lewis & Clark would answer with two runs of its own in the bottom of the first.
The score remained tied until a Galapon single in the fifth scored Collado and
Shanelle Lum while Galapon later scored on a passed ball, pushing the Lute edge to 5-2. L&C added a run in the sixth but it was enough as the Lutes walked away with the doubleheader sweep.
Collado finished two-for-three at the plate in the nightcap with
Amaya Smith earning the win inside the circle, pitching 6 1/3 innings of long relief and racking up seven strikeouts.
Emma Ware closed out the game, netting the save after needing just two pitches to record the final two outs in the seventh.
"Glad to be able to come away with two wins today," said Head Coach
Traci Barrett.
"Our defense and pitching showcased very well through both games. Emma continues to be excellent in relief and as a closer. To finish game two she threw two pitches to close the game for the win. Amaya has worked diligently this spring and when we needed her early in game two she stepped up big time and got the win. Chaella and Molly with clutch home runs and Brooke with a big RBI single in game one to get us going. We are looking to ourselves offensively and go 1-0 as always."
The Lutes and Pioneers close out the series tomorrow with another doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
