TACOMA, Wash. – The Pacific Lutheran University women's tennis team earned their first Northwest Conference victory of the season with a 7-2 win over Willamette University on Saturday afternoon at Sprinker Recreation Center.
"I'm super proud how the team competed against an evenly matched team," said PLU Head Coach
Cheri Campbell. "We started off strong with leading 2-1 after doubles. Nguyen and Sarmiento came back from an 0-4 deficit to win at the No. 3 doubles spot. The Lutes kept the momentum during singles. Taylor stepped up with a huge win at No. 1 singles, using her wide range of strokes to outlast her opponent."
The Lutes held a 2-1 lead after doubles action as
Jillian Chong and
Meggie Burnett won 8-1 at No. 2 doubles and
Libertad Sarmiento and
Lilian Nguyen were tested, but prevailed 8-5 at No. 3.
In singles action, senior
Taylor Stokes was pushed to the limit, but came through with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 victory. Burnett was victorious at No. 3 (6-3, 6-3) as was Nguyen at No. 4 (6-3, 6-4). Sarmiento dominated her opponent at No. 5, winning 6-2, 6-3 and
Katelyn Gonzalez picked up the victory at No. 6 (6-0, 6-1).
Burnett earned her team-leading sixth win of the season in both singles and doubles.
