Sluggish Start Derails Lutes, 2-1

TACOMA, Wash. — Trevor Thompson tallied his team-leading sixth goal of the season but it wasn't enough to erase a sluggish first half as the homestanding Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team fell 2-1 to Northwest Conference rival Whitman College 2-1 on Sunday at East Field.

The visiting Blues (5-4-1, 2-1-1 NWC) wasted little time getting on the board, scoring in the ninth minute with Edwin Romero scoring off a pass from Zachary Stonier. Whitman made it 2-0 in the 35th minute, banging home a goal off a rebounded shot.

PLU (7-2, 2-2 NWC) came alive in the second half with Thompson scoring in the 51st minute off a pass from Cris Lozano. It was Thompson's sixth goal of the year and the second assist of the season for Lozano. The Lutes continued to put their foot on the gas in the second half with shots from Lozano and Thompson both rattling off the posts later in the half. Ultimately, the Blues did just enough to hold on for the win.

Nicholas Gaston made two saves on the day in goal, playing all 90 minutes.
The Lutes hit the road next weekend, facing George Fox University on Saturday in Newberg, Oregon.
