TACOMA, Wash. – The Pacific Lutheran women's soccer team prides itself on team defense and it is easy to see why after Saturday.
The Lutes shut out No. 22 Emory 1-0 in a nonconference matchup at East Field.
Alyssa Leong scored the lone goal in the 10
th minute, capitalizing on a turnover, beating a defender and then beating the Emory goalkeeper slotting the ball into the lower left corner for the game-winner.
From there, the Lutes (2-0 overall) defense went to work, constantly sniffing out any chances the Eagles (1-1) had.
PLU goalie
Shaylin Cesar was rarely challenged as the stifling defense of the Lutes led by captains
Ellie Reardon and
Ella Merte shut down all of the Eagles chances.
Cesar finished with four saves, while
Julia Causbie had PLU's best chance at a second goal hitting the crossbar on a long shot.
The Lutes are back in action at 2 p.m. PDT on Friday at Ohio Northern University in Wheaton, Illinois.
