FOREST GROVE, Ore. - The Pacific Lutheran volleyball team is getting healthy and it is showing in results.
The Lutes defeated Pacific in five sets — 25-19, 20-25, 25-16, 19-25, 15-7 — to win their second consecutive match.
Baylee Johnson's 17 kills led the Lutes offensively, while Elle Thomas added 13 and Claire Hindman had nine.
"We have been through so much this season that another five-set match was not going to deter us," PLU coach Kevin Aoki said. "The team has stuck together."
In the decisive fifth set, PLU (7-6 overall, 2-3 NWC) jumped out to a 7-1 lead thanks to three kills by Hindman and an ace as the transfer took over early.
Thomas added a pair of kills and Hailey Iha had another as Pacific (7-5, 3-3) made four hitting errors and two service errors to close out the match.
It was the first five-set win in three tries this season for the Lutes.
PLU has been ravaged by injuries in the early going of the season, but results like Friday show things are turning in the right direction.
The Lutes are back in action at 6 p.m. Saturday at Willamette.
