MESA, Ariz. — Chloe Andrewjeski rose to the occasion on Tuesday evening. Playing in just her second collegiate dual match, the first-year came through when it mattered most, securing the decisive point in the short-staffed Pacific Lutheran University women's tennis team's 5-4 victory over host Mesa Community College.
"It was a stellar performance today by the Lutes," said Head Coach
Michael Harmon.
"We started off well to win two very tight doubles matches. The match came down to No. 1 singles with the score tied 4-4. Chloe came through to win it for us in a third set tiebreaker with superb shot making under pressure. This was an excellent win considering we started the dual down 0-3 due to injuries and a small roster."
The Lutes (2-0) opened the match by taking two of the three doubles matches. Andrewjeski and
Lilian Nguyen slipped past the Thunderbirds' No. 1 tandem by n 8-6 scoreline while
Meggie Burnett and
Jillian Chong prevailed 8-5 at the No. 2 position. Host Mesa secured the win at No. 3 doubles by default.
In singles, Mesa took the wins at No. 5 and No. 6 by default but the Lutes won three of the remaining four to get the win.
Chong collected the, 6-3, 6-1, victory at No. 3 while Burnett secured the win at No. 4 by an identical scoreline. Andrewjeski was the different, coming away with a, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) win at No. 1 singles over Mesa's Alethea Lacroix.
The Lutes are back on the court tomorrow morning with a dual against Ottawa University at 10 a.m. followed by a match with Arizona Christian University at 1 p.m.
