Women's Tennis Splits in Final Day in Arizona

GLENDALE, Ariz. - The Pacific Lutheran University women's tennis team closed out its Arizona trip on Tuesday with a doubleheader split. The Lutes bested Ottawa University 4-1 in the morning before coming up short against Arizona Christian University by a 6-1 scoreline.

Against Ottawa, Lilian Nguyen and Chloe Andrewjeski won by default at No. 2 doubles while the Lutes' (3-1) No. 1 tandem of Jillian Chong and Meggie Burnett came up just short 6-4.

In singles, Chloe Andrewjeski collected a, 6-1, 6-3, win over the Spirit's Maya Salamon while Chong, Burnett, and Ella Burriss all earned wins by default at the No. 3 through No. 5 singles positions.

Against Arizona Christian, the host Firestorm won two of the three doubles matches. Chong and Burriss secured the victory at No. 2, downing Karla Grobbelaar and Kendra Farrell 8-4.

In singles, Burnett held off Emma Troyer, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 5 for PLU's lone victory in singles play against Arizona Christian.

Both matches were scored with one point awarded for each singles win along with one point for the squad that won the most doubles matches instead of the typical Division III scoring system that has all matches scored as one point.

"Chloe had a solid win at No. 1 singles as we went on to defeat Ottawa. We played at a very high level against a very seasoned ACU team with Ella winning her singles match and teaming up with Jillian to beat a high-rated doubles team. Super proud of the way we competed and we definitely played our best tennis today," said Head Coach Michael Harmon.

The Lutes are back on the court on Feb. 15 with a non-conference showdown with crosstown nemesis University of Puget Sound.
