TACOMA, Wash. — A cold shooting second quarter derailed the Pacific Lutheran University women's basketball team on Tuesday night, stumbling 64-40 to reigning Northwest Conference Champion University of Puget Sound inside Memorial Field House.
The Lutes (4-3, 0-2 NWC) were able to trade blows with the reigning NWC Champions in the opening quarter, shooting 55.6 percent from the floor and 66.7 percent from three-point range.
Sydney Reisner drained a trey to open the game as the two squads traded buckets in the opening minutes. An
Ava Edmonds jumper late in the first quarter made it 16-13 but Puget Sound (4-3, 2-0 NWC) pulled away in the second quarter, using a 10-0 run to extend their lead into double digits. A
Tami Gallo-Paul three with 2:30 left before halftime stopped the Logger run but the damage was already done as Puget Sound took a 30-18 advantage into the break.
"We'll take a lot of learns away from this game," said Head Coach
Lee Aduddell.
"I was really pleased with how we handled the press but we lacked toughness in the frontcourt. You can credit UPS for our poor shooting because they made us uncomfortable all night."
Jaida Wood paced the Lutes with nine points while Rylie Wardenaar added eight. Edmonds hauled in a team-best five rebounds.
Puget Sound controlled the glass, owning a 39-20 rebounding advantage including a 15-5 edge in offensive boards.
The Loggers' 64 points was their lowest offense output against the Lutes since a 67-62 PLU victory during the 2019-2020 season.
The Lutes open up an eight-game homestand on Thursday, welcoming Multnomah University to Olson Gymnasium. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m.
