Reisner Drops 20 but Pios Slip Past Lutes

TACOMA, Wash.--The Pacific Lutheran University women's basketball team had a chance to tie the game in the waning seconds but was unable to get a shot off, nearly overcoming a double-digit deficit in a 58-55 setback to Lewis & Clark College on Friday inside Olson Gymnasium.

The Lutes (9-5, 1-4 NWC) trailed by 10 with 2:45 remaining in the game and were staring at an eight-point gap with 1:43 to play. An Ava Edmonds three followed by layups from both Sydney Reisner and Brandie Tobin closed the Lutes to within a single point with 38 ticks left. The teams traded free throws before Karli Mukai sunk a pair with 18 seconds remaining to put the Pioneers (3-10, 1-4 NWC) up three.

PLU missed all four of its free throws in the final seven seconds but still had a chance with 0.01 seconds left thanks to a Reisner steal. Unfortunately for the Lutes, they were unable to get off a shot as Lewis & Clark hung on for the nail-biting win.

Friday's game featured six lead changes and three ties with most of those coming in the opening stanza. L&C led 15-11 after one quarter of action and enjoyed a slim 27-26 edge at the halftime intermission.

Pacific Lutheran took its first lead since the early moments of the game with 8:46 remaining in the third on an Emi Wada layup but it proved to be fleeting with the Pioneers retaking the lead just over a minute later as they took a three-point gap into the final frame.

"We came out with no energy and played like that most of the game. You can't win a game with that sort of effort," said Head Coach Lee Aduddell.

"Sydney was a bright spot for us tonight, she played a really gutsy game."

Reisner led all scorers with 20 points while also adding three steals. Edmonds drained four three-pointers on the night and ended with 18 points while Shaela Allen-Greggs hauled in nine rebounds, including six on the offensive end. Brandie Tobin added five boards while dishing out five assists.

PLU closes out its eight game homestand tomorrow, hosting Pacific University at 4 p.m.
