SALEM, Ore. — Eight personal bests headlined a banner day for the Pacific Lutheran University women's cross country team on Saturday as the Lutes finished 17th as a team at the 49th-annual Charles Bowles Invitational.
"This was a huge day for our women with almost everyone having a great day of racing," said Head Coach
Jacob Wahlenmaier.
Anna Iverson led the way, touring the 5,000-meter course in a personal best time of 19 minutes, 22.2 seconds to place 81st overall.
Sal Mattivi was a few steps back in 88th overall, clocking a massive nearly 2 ½ minute collegiate PR by finishing in 19:25.4.
Zoey Diviney was the third Lute finisher, clocking a 20:15.5 and placing 132nd overall with
Jessalyn Robles close behind in 137th with a PR effort of 20:20.2.
Annika Deazley rounded out the Lute scoring five with a time of 20:20.2.
Natalie Moran-Padilla,
Rachel Rosario,
Sophia Czar,
Damaris Ibrahim, and
Erika Andres all notched personal bests on the day as well for the black and gold.
"Four of our top five had breakthrough races and just about everyone else ran extremely well.
Rachel Rosario set a huge lifetime personal record on a course that's been fairly slow for us in the past as she continues to improve at a rapid pace. I believe that we'll continue to make great progress and make a big move at conference."
PLU tallied 445 points in the team standings, placing 65 points clear of Bushnell University in 17th overall at the 21-team invitational. Division I Saint Mary's College took top billing, scoring 56 points with College of Southern Idaho second with 76 points. Host Willamette University was the top Division III squad, finishing 12thwith a team tally of 320.
The Lutes are off next weekend before making a return trip to Oregon, racing at the Lewis & Clark Invitational on October 19.
