FOREST GROVE, Ore. — The Pacific Lutheran University women's swimming team won 11 events on Saturday, overwhelming host Pacific University 143-62 in the Lutes' final Northwest Conference dual meet of the fall semester.
"Today the Lutes shined with some new events and some familiar ones as we prepare for our mid-season invite at George Fox next weekend," said Head Coach
Andrew Lum.
"Despite our heavy training load, the Lutes looked sharp and were ready to perform."
The Lutes opened the meet by squeaking out a win in the 200-yard medley relay by a razor thin, 0.16 seconds as
Emma Gassman,
Scout Hawkins,
Melissa Zuniga, and
Matthea Gaines touched the wall in one minute, 56.84 seconds to edge out the Boxers.
Anna Haneda blew away the filed in the 200-yard freestyle, winning in 2:14.38 while Gassman took the top spot in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:02.71.
Hawkins won by 0.11 seconds in the 100-yard breaststroke, stopping the clock in 1:11.65 while Zuniga breezed to the win in the 200-yard butterfly (2:30.88).
Karina Yevstifieieva won the 100-yard freestyle in 58.77 with Hawkins winning a third event after taking the 200-yard backstroke in 2:18.12.
Riley Maher earned a 10-second win in the 200-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 2:40.95 while Gassman crushed the field in the 500-yard freestyle (5:47.92).
Hawkins prevailed in the 400-yard individual medley, her fourth event win and third individual event win of the day, edging teammate
Riley Maher in a time of 4:58.23.
The squad closed out the day with a mixed relay win in the 200-yard freestyle with Gaines and
Ellie Cutting collaborating with two members of the men's team to win in 1:44.04.
The Lutes (2-2) close out the semester of racing next Saturday at the Bruin Invitational held at George Fox University.
