PUYALLUP, Wash. — Thor Stepina had his third multi-touchdown game of the season, hauling in two on Saturday as the Pacific Lutheran University football team stretched its win streak to four with a 24-14 victory over George Fox University in a Northwest Conference clash at Sparks Stadium.
The Lutes (6-2, 4-1 NWC) scored on their opening drive with
Cole Sargent booting a 23-yard field goal to cap off a 18-play, 69-yard drive. The Bruins (4-4, 2-3 NWC) would answer on the next drive, tossing a 69-yard touchdown pass on their third play from scrimmage.
Sam Morasch provided a spark late in the second quarter, picking off a Bruin pass with 18 seconds left to set the Lute offense up at the Bruin 38-yard line. PLU needed just two play to turn the turnover into point with
Noah Palitz hauling in an 18-yard pass before
Darius Chaffin hit
Thor Stepina from 20-yards out to make it 10-7 PLU with four seconds left before halftime.
Pacific Lutheran added separation in its first drive of the second half, taking advantage of a short field and marching 55-yards on just four plays to make it 17-7. Stepina caught a 27-yard catch to start the drive and finished it off with a 10-yard reception for his second score of the afternoon.
The Lutes put the game away in the fourth, grinding off over six minutes of clock in a 10-play, 62-yard drive that culminated in a 10-yard touchdown reception from
Jonathan Tyrell-Smith.
The Bruins scored on the next drive but it was too little, too late, as PLU extended its win streak to four games.
"We're proud of how our guys fought back after going down quickly," said Head Coach
Brant McAdams.
"We've emphasized winning the battle up front, taking care of the football, and making the big play, and we did all three of those today."
Chaffin finished the game 22-for-32 through the air with 223 yards and three touchdowns and no interceptions. Stepina was again his top target with nine catches for 106 yards and a pair of scores.
Micah Ragaza-Bourassa had 10 tackles, one sack, and a quarterback hurry while
Kalen Davis-White had eight tackles, including two for a loss.
Nico Golla had two sacks and a hurry for a defense that made the Bruins one dimensional, limiting the visitors to just 15 rushing yards.
The Lutes embark on their final road game of the regular season next Saturday, heading to McMinnville, Oregon to face nationally-ranked Linfield University.
