PORTLAND, Ore. — The Pacific Lutheran University women's basketball team scored the final 14 points of the game on Saturday evening, slipping past host Lewis & Clark College 58-46 in a Northwest Conference tilt inside the Pamplin Sports Center.
The host Pioneers (4-18, 2-12 NWC) used an 8-0 run to take a 46-44 lead with 4:54 remaining in the game but the Lutes (11-12, 3-11 NWC) kept L&C off the scoreboard the rest of the way, scoring 14 unanswered, including a half dozen points each from
Sydney Reisner and
Kasidy Javernick to secure the win in PLU's final road game of the season.
Reisner ignited the Lutes' final scoring run of the game, draining a trey with 4:32 left to reclaim the lead. Reisner would extend the lead to four with a three the old fashioned way, sinking a jumper and a free throw before getting a bucket from Javernick with 97 seconds left to make it a six point game. PLU made six free throws down the stretch, including four from Javernick for to earn the double-digit win.
"This was a focused and determined effort tonight for us," said Head Coach
Lee Aduddell.
"Our guard play was outstanding tonight. Kasidy and Sydney made big plays in big moments and that was the difference down the stretch."
Pacific Lutheran owned a 10-6 edge after one quarter of play and took a 28-24 advantage into the locker room at halftime in a game featuring five lead changes and three ties.
Reisner hit three treys on the night, pouring on 21 points to pace all scorers. Saturday's game was the third time this season the sophomore has eclipsed 20 points and is the 14th game in double figures this winter. Javernick added 15 points and eight rebounds while
Ava Edmonds and
Ashley Akamine both added seven points.
Brandie Tobin had a team-high 10 rebounds while also dishing out a team-best four assists.
PLU's stingy defense limited the host Pios to shooting just 31.4 percent (16-for-51) from the field, including a dismal 13.0 percent (three-for-23) from beyond the arc. PLU held a commanding 34-21 rebounding edge and outscored the hosts 26-18 in the paint.
The Lutes are back at home on Friday, hosting Whitworth University at 6 p.m. inside Olson Gymnasium.
