Women's Hoops Shatters Record on Senior Night

TACOMA, Wash. — The Pacific Lutheran University women's basketball team made it a memorable senior night on Saturday evening inside Olson Gymnasium, shattering a 25-year old school record for three-pointers in a season in a 73-47 setback to Northwest Conference rival Whitman College.

The sharpshooting Lutes (11-14, 3-13 NWC) canned five treys on the night, finishing the year with 156 on the season. That mark is two better than PLU's previous record of 154 set during the 1998-1999 campaign. It was the second record the team inked this season after breaking the single game three-point record in Texas back in November.

"This senior class not only has been part of some incredible growth this season but they laid the foundation for our future success. We will miss them immensely," said Head Coach Lee Aduddell.

"Although we have so much more we want to accomplish, for this group to break the season three-point record is really special. They are just a great group of people and I'm lucky to be their coach."

On Saturday the visiting Blues (20-5, 12-4 NWC) led wire-to-wire after opening the game on a 14-2 run. The Lutes answered by scoring the final seven points of the first quarter and closed the gap to just four early in the second quarter on an Ava Edmonds three. Whitman's lead swelled to 17 midway through the quarter but the Lutes battled back, knifing the gap to just 32-22 at the halftime intermission.

A Kaylie Bracy layup reduced the gap to six with 8:59 remaining in the third but it was the closest the Lutes would get as the visitors cruised to the win.

Edmonds made it a memorable senior day by dropping 17 points, shooting seven-for-10 from the floor and hitting three of her four shots from beyond the arc. Kasidy Javernick dropped nine points and had three steals with Taylor Schmidtke hauling down a team-high five rebounds.

PLU enjoyed a 22-18 edge in points in the paint but visiting Whitman made the Lutes pay for their mistakes, owning a 23-4 edge in points off turnovers.

Saturday was senior day with the program celebrating its two seniors— Kaylie Bracy and Ava Edmonds— prior to tipoff.
