HILLSBORO, Ore. --- Pacific Lutheran University's
Brody Phinney was named the Northwest Conference Baseball Athlete of the Week by the conference office on Monday.
Â
The sophomore shortstop found his strike in the month of April, opening the month on the road against the Loggers where he went four-for-six with seven runs batted in. Phinney sparked an 11-run inning from the Lutes, and completing the comeback against the cross-town rivals. Phinney ripped a glam slam home run well over the left centerfield wall attributing to four of his seven runs batted in in the game.
Â
The Olympia, Wash. native then kept his bat warm as the Lutes headed to Portland, Ore. to take on Lewis & Clark in a three-game series. He proceeded to go 3-4 in game one while driving in two more thanks to yet another home run. Game two against the Pioneers resulted in a 1-4 effort, but his one hit was a double where he would come around to score, helping the Lutes win the game.
Â
The series finale against Lewis & Clark was a multi-hit game, going 2-5 with two runs batted in and double; his third of the week. Phinney was a huge factor in the Lutes series win and three wins on the week.
Â
The Lutes starting middle infielder will look to extend his hitting streak to five game against the Whitworth Pirates in a make-up game on Tuesday. Phinney has a hit in 10 of the last 11 games.
