LAKEWOOD, Wash. — Sal Mattivi's first collegiate race was a good one, finishing 18th overall and powering the Pacific Lutheran University women's cross country squad to a fourth place finish on Saturday at the Puget Sound Invitational at Fort Steilacoom Park.
"Our women had a great start to the season. The heat was brutal by the time of their race, but a couple of them who hadn't been feeling well before the race did well considering that," said Head Coach
Jacob Wahlenmaier.
"Sal in particular had an amazing race, really pushing through the field like she was out for a fun run. I'm excited to see where this team will be when we're running our best at the end of the season."
A Bremerton, Washington native, Mattivi navigated the looping and flat 5,000-meter course in 21 minutes, 54.4 seconds, registering 18th overall and one of three Lutes to crack the top 25.
Annika Deazley was 23rd overall in 22:24.2 with
Zoey Diviney a few steps back in 25th in a time of 22:36.5.
Jessalyn Robles was 29th overall in her cross country debut. A soccer player last fall, Robles traversed the 5K course in 23:07.3.
Victoria Lindley and
Natalie Moran-Padilla finished back-to-back in 32nd and 33rd places, finishing in 23:27.5 and 23:29.4, respectively.
Rachel Rosario and
Sophia Czar finished 39th and 40th overall in their Lute debuts while
Damaris Ibrahim was 45th overall.
The Lutes finished fourth overall in the team standings, scoring 109 points. Host University of Puget Sound won the five-team meet with a team tally of 29 with Clark College placing runner-up with a score of 38.
