Lutes Defense Tames Wildcats in 2-0 Win

TACOMA, Wash. --- The Pacific Lutheran Women's Soccer team (2-1-3, 2-0-1 NWC) broke through for their first Northwest Conference win of the 2024 season, defeating the Wildcats 2-0.

The Wildcats one and only shot on goal in the contest came early, as sophomore goalkeeper Abby Winkler made the save. Hannah Cecil fired two shots that could not beat the Wildcats keeper, with the second deflecting back into play where Ally Tattar would score it to put the Lutes up 1-0 in the 31st minute.

The PLU defense continued their shutout streak, forcing Linfield to get more aggressive on offense. A pair of Wildcats earned yellow cards to close out the opening half with the Lutes on top, 1-0.

The defense of both squads proved that they weren't going to let up, even though PLU possessed the ball for the majority of the half, they were unable to get any clear looks at the Wildcats goal.

Senior Julia Causbie found the back of the net in the 71st minute, extending the Lutes lead to two. Causbie scored on a free kick attempt just outside of the box; her kick deflected off the Wildcats keeper's gloves and hit the right post then into the net.

The Lutes held on for their second consecutive shutout, but Kiana Gutierrez picked up a yellow card in the 83rd minute for a delay of game before taking a free kick.

The offense could not match their 24 shot attempts from Saturday's contest, but they made good use of the nine shots they took on Sunday. Five of the Lutes nine attempts were on-frame, in which Causbie and Tattar would each beat the keeper once. Cecil was credited with the lone assist in the game.

PLU defense showed their strength this homestand, posting two shutouts and allowing just four shots to the Wildcats on Sunday. Linfield only managed one attempt on-target, which earned Abby Winkler her lone save.

The Lutes will earn a couple of days rest before hosting rival Puget Sound on East Field next Wednesday at 7 p.m.
