Men's Soccer Battles Blues to 1-1 Draw

WALLA WALLA, Wash.— The Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team battled with Whitman College resulting in a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon.

The Lutes improved their overall record to 6-3-2 and 5-0-2 in Northwest Conference play. This marks just the fourth time in the 72 matches all-time between the two schools that resulted in a tie.

PLU started off the match early with a goal in the 14th minute by Misha Turchaninov who curled a shot outside the 18-yard box after a well-timed through pass from Alvin Kamau. The Lutes defense would defend their lead for the rest of the half but not after being bombarded by the Blues offense with 10 total shots and seven shots on goal. Whitman would finally collect pay dirt in the second half finding the back of the net in the 51st minute equalizing the game 1-1.

Gio Aguilar-Gutierrez and the Lutes defense did everything they could to stop a potent Blues' offense. Aguilar-Gutierrez notched all 90 minutes and finished with10 saves. Only behind PLU, Whitman is the second-highest scoring team in the NWC with 2.273 goals per game.

The Lutes will be back on the pitch tomorrow at 2:45 PM as they travel to take on third-place Whitworth University Pirates.
