Lutes Rainy Clash with Pirates Results in 1-1 Tie

SPOKANE, Wash.— The Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team combated wet and rainy field conditions and the Whitworth University Pirates concluding in a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon.

Coming in to today's match up, PLU owned a nine game winning streak against their Northwest Conference foes the Pirates. Lutes improve their record 6-3-3 overall and 5-0-3 in NWC play and remain in second place in the standings with 18 points.

"It was a tough game today," Head Coach John Yorke stated. "Whitman is a good team and with our strong effort and inability to do more with some chances we had was frustrating. Getting only four shots on goal out of 20 is not going to win a lot of games. We had a little trouble with the wet grass, but that really didn't play a factor to the final results."

In back-to-back games, PLU was able to strike first blood scoring the opening minutes of the match with Landon Sexton punching in a header in the 23rd minute played in from Caden Davis off a corner. Lutes would control the pace of play and maintain the lead until the 80th minute where the Pirates would curl a free-kick just outside the 18 yard box in to the corner of the net equalizing the game at 1-1. Sexton now is the highest scoring defender in the NWC sitting at three goals so far this season.

The second highest scoring team in the NWC, the Lutes, failed to reach their goals per game average of 2.333 which when completed results in a 5-0-1 overall record.

The Lutes return to the pitch at 2:45 PM on Saturday, October 18th as they take on the Lewis & Clark College Pioneers.
