Lutes Unveil 2026 Hall of Fame Class

TACOMA, Wash. — The Pacific Lutheran University athletic department released its 35th induction class for the Athletics Hall of Fame with six individuals set to be enshrined during a ceremony inside Olson Gymnasium on Saturday, April 18. Those entering the Hall of Fame include soccer's Spencer Augustin and Chad Kearns, softball's Stacey Hagensen and Kaaren Hatlen, and track & field athletes Sandy Metzger and Craig Stelling. 

Spencer Augustin (Men's Soccer: 2008-2011)
Augustin was the 2011 Northwest Conference Offensive Player of the Year, setting a then school record for points in a single season and helping the Lutes win the NWC title and make the program's first ever NCAA Division III Tournament appearance. Augustin was on the ground floor in building the men's soccer team into a regional juggernaut, finishing his career with 35 goals and 88 total points. Those marks have stood the test of time, still ranking eighth all-time in both career goals and points. His school record for single season points stood until the 2023 season and now ranks third all-time in program history. A 2011 First Team All-Conference selection, Augustin helped the Lutes win 48 games over his four year career. 

Stacey Hagensen (Softball: 2009-2012)
Hagensen was one of the most dominant players in school history, guiding the Lutes to the NCAA Division III National Title in 2012. Hagensen was a three-time First Team All-NWC selection, a three-time All-Region selection, and a two-time All-American. Hagensen was a First Team CoSIDA Academic All-American and was named the Honda Sports Award D3 Player of the Year as the top female athlete in all of NCAA Division III. The 2012 National Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Hagensen holds career records for runs scored (152) and hits (208) while sitting fifth all-time in both RBIs (147) and home runs (28). A prolific pitcher, Hagensen ranks second in innings pitched (579 1/3), complete games (70), shutouts (22), and third in career wins (66).

Kaaren Hatlen (Softball: 2010-2013)
Hatlen was a member of the 2012 NCAA Division III Championship winning team and one of the best hitters in program history. Hatlen was a three-time First Team All-NWC selection and a three-time All-Region honoree, earning All-American honors as a designated player in 2012. Hatlen was named the NWC Woman of the Year in 2013 and was a finalist for the NCAA Woman of the Year. Hatlen ranks second in program history in walks (72), third in RBIs (171), fourth in career home runs (32), and fifth in hits (188). Over her four seasons, the Lutes won 126 games, including 82 in NWC play.

Chad Kearns (Men's Soccer: 2008-2011)
A three-time First Team All-Conference player, Kearns was the 2010 NWC Offensive Player of the Year and helped the Lutes win the NWC title in 2011 and make the program's first ever trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Kearns was a two-time NSCAA All-West Region selection, earning First Team honors in 2010. Kearns' six game-winning goals in 2011 is still tied as a school single season record while he holds sole possession of first place in career game-winners with 17. Kearns also sits sixth all-time in career goals (41) and points (96).

Sandy Metzger (Women's Track & Field: 1993-1996)
Metzer was a four-year All-American for the Lutes, competing in 12 events at the NAIA Championships during her career. Metzer won 10 total Northwest Conference titles, winning two titles in the 200-meter dash, two in the 400-meter dash, and was a three-time champion as a member of the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays. As a senior, finished fourth in the 400-meters at the national meet and was sixth in the 200-meters. Metzer helped the team win three NWC titles and powered the team to three top 10 showings at the national meet, including a third place finish in 1995. Metzer still holds the school record in the 400-meters (55.06) and s third all-time in the 200-meters and sixth in the 100-meters. 

Craig Stelling (Men's Track & Field: 1984-1987)
Stelling is one of the best javelins throwers to ever attend PLU, finishing his career as a four-time NAIA meet qualifier and a two-time All-American. Stelling won three Northwest Conference titles in the javelin and was runner-up in another while winning four consecutive NAIA district titles. He finished in the top 10 at the NAIA Championships all four seasons, including a fourth place finish in 1986 and a runner-up showing as a senior in 1987. Stelling graduated with the school record in the javelin, a record that stood until 1998 and still ranks second all-time. Stelling went on to compete at the 1992 US Olympic Trials and competed in five USTAF Championships.
