Treves & Wilson Both Toss No-Hitters in Florida Sweep

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Rachel Treves and Paige Wilson both threw five-inning no-hitters on Saturday as the Pacific Lutheran University softball team continued to steamroll the competition at The Spring Games. The Lutes blasted Widener University 8-0 to open the day while winning by the same score against Gordon College to finish off the afternoon.

PLU finished the day outhitting the two opponents by a combined 19-0 margin while Treves and Wilson combined for 14 strikeouts while issuing just three free passes all day. The two no-hitters are the 33rd and 34th in program history and the first time PLU has held an opponent hitless since teammate Rachael Rhinehart did so on April 20th of last season against Pacific University. It's additionally the first time in program history that PLU has notched two no-hitters on the same day.

"What a special day in the circle for us! Both Paige and Rachel had a really great two days of preparation getting ready to come in this week and pitch and to see them dominate the way that they did was excellent! They're both different pictures and the hitters that we face were different types of hitters, and so to see them hit spots and find their own path was really awesome! Kind of fun to have a freshman Bri Sarae catch both games and get her feet wet, catching two no hitters back to back as well!" said Head Coach Traci Barrett.

Against Widener (3-4) Treves was nearly perfect on Saturday, striking out five and issuing just one walk in the no-hitter that was the 33rd in program history.

Bri Sarae put the Lutes (8-2) on the board in the second inning blasting a triple to right field to score Brookelyn Gutierrez. PLU piled on four runs in the next inning, getting an RBI triple from Zoe Smithson followed by RBI doubles from Kamalani Doctor and Emelia Maza. An Addy Meyers sacrifice fly scored Maza, making it a 5-0 Lute lead.

A Syan Yamamoto RBI groundout scored Brooke Tilson in the fourth while a Smithson base hit played Jaycie Sompliciano later in the inning, making it a seven-run cushion. Meyers scored in the fifth on a Pride fielding error, making it a 8-0 edge in the mercy rule shortened game.

Smithson finished two-for-three with two RBIs while Sarae was also two-for-three in the win that saw the Lutes outhit Widener 9-0.

Wilson had nine punchouts to earn the no-hitter in game two, issuing just two walks.

The Lutes piled on four runs in the first inning and four more in the second against Gordon, cruising to the mercy rule win. Smithson got things started with an RBI single to score Yamamoto before a Doctor base hit allowed Smithson to come home. A Gutierrez single scored Doctor with Tilson making it 4-0 PLU with a single to left field.

Doctor ripped a two-RBI triple in the second inning to make it 6-0 before scoring along with Gillian Renzullo on a Meyers double later in the inning.

Smithson was a perfect three-for-three in the nightcap, scoring two runs while Doctor had three RBIs, two hits, and two runs scored.

"In a day like this, clearly the defense has to be on point and our defensive improvement from last weekend to this weekend has been excellent! At this pace, Zoe Smithson continues to be a very tough out, which is what we all know, but for her to kind of feel in a groove has been fun to watch! We finish up tomorrow with two more teams and we'll see what we can put together."

The Lutes, winners of four straight, wrap up the Florida trip tomorrow with games against Saint Joseph's College (Maine) and Washington College (Md.).
