Women's Soccer Scores Draw in Battle of Nationally Ranked Squads

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — An immovable object met an unstoppable force on Sunday as the 23rd-ranked Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against host and 10th-ranked Trinity University on a hot day at Paul McGinlay Field.

Both squads were NCAA Division III Tournament teams a season ago with the eight-time Northwest Conference Champion Lutes (0-0-2) advancing to the second round while the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Champion Tigers (1-0-1) were an Elite Eight team in 2024.

The host Tigers struck first, with Bri Werner scoring her second goal of the young season in the third minute off a pass from Alex Doran. Trinity took a 1-0 lead into the halftime intermission, enjoying a 9-1 edge in shots, including all four on frame.

Kiana Gutierrez was the hero for the Lutes in the second half, scoring in the 50th minute with Olivia Boehm credited with the assist. The goal was Gutierrez's first of the season and the second of her career. Boehm's helper was her first of 2025 and fifth of her career.

Neither team was able to break through over the final 40 minutes, settling for the 1-1 stalemate.

"Super proud of our team today, Trinity is an excellent opponent," said Head Coach Seth Spidahl.

"It was 90 degrees and they have a very big field. I was proud of our work rate, our sprinting intensity, and we defended well. We went down early and found a way to score a goal in the second half and then really showed some toughness to hold on. It was a great way to end the trip. We have a lot to work on, and improve on, and we know that, that's not uncommon for a first weekend but as disappointed as we were in the tie on Friday, today was a good tie. Today was a big step forward for this team, team 45, and our program."

Trinity outgunned the Lutes 25-3 and held a 9-2 edge in shots on target. Gutierrez and Marie Piho accounted for PLU's two shots on goal.

Abby Winkler had a busy day in goal, managing the Texas heat and making eight saves on the day. Trinity played two keepers on the day with Claire Binns making one save and surrendering one goal in 45 minutes of work.

The Lutes rugged non-league slate continues on Friday, opening up their home slate against 2023 National Champion California Lutheran University. Kickoff at East Field is set for 5 p.m.
