Men's Soccer Routs Puget Sound 4-0 Under the Lights

TACOMA, Wash.— The Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team toppled the University of Puget Sound 4-0 under the lights of East Field Wednesday evening.

In the 78th all-time match up between the Lutes and Loggers, PLU has either won or tied in the last seven straight games compiling a 5-0-2 overall record and outscoring UPS 20-5.

"The hardest thing to do in our game is score goals," Head Coach John Yorke commented. "We've been creating a lot of chances, but early in the season we weren't converting them. We work on finishing every day in some capacity and our guys have really started to come around on it and be more clinical."

The tone was set by Gio Aguilar-Gutierrez coming up with a game-changing penalty kick save in the 12th minute.

"We are so fortunate to have a very talented group of goalkeeper," Yorke said. "Tonight was Gio's turn to make a big play for us. He read the penalty well and made a game changing save."

Lutes never looked back from there as scoring was opened up by Owen Bliskis in the 24th minute wrapping one to the near corner off a played in by Connor O'Brien 1-0. Landon Sexton would then decisively finish a header off a corner kick played in from Caden Davis to give PLU a 2-0 advantage in the 37th minute. Lutes go in to halftime up 2-0 and out shooting the Loggers 10-3. O'Brien kept the momentum going in the second half, delivering a well-timed ball to Bliskis at the six yard line which was tucked away in the left corner of the goal to add to the lead 3-0. Mike Murega established that the night wasn't over the Lutes racing down the field to beat two defenders and lace a hard shot through the netting shutting down any chances of come back 4-0 PLU in the 88th minute.
"I loved how the guys played tonight," Yorke stated. "A very confident, competitive, and mature performance. UPS are a good team who pose a lot of problems. Our ability to both play hard and problem solve tonight was excellent. I'm really proud of this group of guys and the way they are playing."

Pacific Lutheran improves to 4-3 overall, 3-0 NWC play and will be back in on Saturday, September 27th as they take on the Willamette Unviersity Bearcats in Salem, Oregon. Kick-off is set for 2:45 PM.
