TACOMA, Wash. — Emi Wada sunk a jumper with 0.2 ticks left to send the game into overtime but free throws ultimately decided Saturday's Northwest Conference clash inside Olson Gymnasium with the Pacific Lutheran University women's basketball team falling 72-62 to Lewis & Clark College.
Â
The third time was the charm for the Lutes (1-10, 0-2 NWC) at the end of regulation who had three chances to tie or take the lead in the final 47 seconds. After two empty possessions it was Wada who would extend the game, making a game-tying jumper with 0.2 seconds left, tying the game at 56.
Â
In overtime, the River Otters (3-7, 1-1 NWC) would score the first seven points with five coming at the charity stripe. All told, Lewis & Clark made a dozen free throws in overtime, tilting the scales in its favor to secure the win.
Â
The Lutes got off to a fast start, tallying the first five points of the game, but the River Otters answered with the score deadlocked at 11 after 10 minutes of play. Lewis & Clark built an 18-13 lead with 6:45 left in the second quarter but PLU scored 16 of the next 21, seizing a 29-23 lead on a
Kiley McMahon trey with 90 seconds left in the half. Lewis & Clark narrowed the gap, trailing by just one at 29-28 at the break in a wild opening two quarters that featured six ties and four lead changes.Â
Â
A
Lilli Williams jumper with 4:27 left in the third quarter capped off an 8-2 Lute run, putting the hosts up seven. L&C answered, reducing the PLU edge to just a single point heading into the fourth quarter.
Neither team led by more than a possession in the fourth quarter with the Wada jumper sending it to overtime.Â
"We knew this game would come down to rebounding. Ultimately, we gave them too many chances, both off offensive rebounds and at the line," said Head Coach
Lee Aduddell.
Sydney Reisner led the way, dropping 20 points for the second straight night. Reisner hit four treys in the game and was a perfect four-for-four at the free throw line. Williams added eight points and team-best 10 rebounds while
Kylie Griffin,
Kate Wooten, and Wada all tallied seven points.Â
Â
PLU outshot the River Otters but found an inopportune time to get cold, going one-for-eight in overtime. Lewis & Clark earned the win at the charity stripe, making more free throws (26) than the Lutes head attempts (18).Â
The Lutes close out their six game homestand on Tuesday night, hosting crosstown nemesis University of Puget Sound. Tipoff inside Olson Gymnasium is set for 5:30 p.m.
