Lutes Shut Out Whitman in 2-0 Victory

TACOMA, Wash. — The Pacific Lutheran University women's soccer team earned a 2-0 victory over Whitman College on Saturday afternoon at East Field, scoring twice in the first half to secure a Northwest Conference win.

The Lutes wasted little time finding their rhythm, opening the scoring in the 20th minute. Tia Schwetz netted her first goal of the season, with Kyleigh Archer and Abby Manolovitz providing assists to give Pacific Lutheran the early advantage.

Just over three minutes later, the Lutes struck again. Manolovitz found the back of the net off an assist from Keara Saks, recording her third goal of the season and extending the lead to 2-0.

Pacific Lutheran carried the two-goal advantage into halftime after controlling much of the opening period. The Lutes recorded six shots in the first half while holding Whitman without a shot on goal.

Whitman applied more pressure in the second half, putting five shots on target, but goalkeeper Mia Speir came up with five saves to preserve the shutout. The Lutes' defense held strong throughout the final 45 minutes to secure the victory.

Pacific Lutheran finished with eight shots and five corner kicks, while limiting Whitman to five total shots. Speir played all 90 minutes in goal, recording her fifth save of the afternoon to help the Lutes earn the clean sheet.

The win improves Pacific Lutheran to 6-2-3 overall and 4-1-2 in Northwest Conference play. Whitman falls to 7-2-2 overall and 6-1-0 in conference action.

The Lutes return to East Field on Sunday, Oct. 11, to host Whitworth University. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:45 p.m.
