HILLSBORO, Ore. – Ben Tellez was unstoppable over the weekend for the Pacific Lutheran University men's basketball team and on Monday was rewarded for his performance, winning Northwest Conference Player of the Week.
The Concord, California native averaged 31.5 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per game over a pair of road games in Oregon. That included setting a school record for threes and becoming just the eighth Lute in program history to score 40 points in a game and the first since 2008.
Tellez opened the weekend by scoring 23, draining five three-pointers against Linfield University on Friday. On Saturday, Tellez shredded the Pacific University zone defense, scoring the first nine points of the game and finishing with 40 points, shooting 12-for-20 from beyond the arc in a 94-49 blowout of the Boxers.
The senior guard has now scored at least 19 points in each of the last nine games and becomes the third different Lute to earn NWC Player of the Week this season.
Dom Perasso was tabbed NWC Player of the Week on Dec. 8 and on Nov. 10 while
Charlie Kapranos was recognized on Nov. 17.
The Lutes (11-12, 5-9 NWC) finish off the regular season at home this weekend, hosting NWC regular season champion Whitworth University on Friday night and Whitman College on Saturday afternoon. Â
