Boxers Top Lutes in Series Finale

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — A late rally derailed the Pacific Lutheran University baseball team's plan for a series sweep with the Lutes stumbling 6-4 to Northwest Conference rival Pacific University on Sunday at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.

PLU (5-8, 3-5 NWC) entered the game looking to sweep the series after collecting a pair of 7-6 extra inning victories on Saturday.

Carson Burke put the Lutes on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning, belting a two-run home run. The Boxers (6-15, 3-6 NWC) responded in the bottom of the frame with a run, before Tyler Yarger doubled in Braeden Lundberg in the second inning, giving PLU the 3-1 lead.

Pacific pushed across another run in the bottom of the second, once again making it a one-run game.

Ethan Keintz doubled in Lundberg in the fourth inning, giving PLU a 4-2 advantage.

Pacific added a run in the sixth inning before piling on three more in the seventh inning to seize a 6-4 lead. The Lutes were unable to manufacture any more runs, stranding two on base in the eighth inning while having the potential tying run at the plate in the ninth.

Kyle Tat finished two-for-three with a walk and one runs scored while Burke was two-for-five with two RBIs.

Cole Miller earned the start and struck out one in 1 1/3 innings of work. Osei Kimura tossed 4 2/3 innings of long relief, striking out two. Wyatt Norris and Connor Tutino tossed the final two innings, each allowing a hit.

The Lutes are back on the diamond on Wednesday, hosting George Fox University at 2 p.m.
