TACOMA, Wash. — The Pacific Lutheran University women's track & field team collected several personal bests on Saturday, closing out spring break across town at the University of Puget Sound's Peyton-Shotwell Invitational.
"I thought it was a strong day for us coming off of spring break," said Head Coach
Trey Henderson.
"There were a good number of PR's and that continued progression is a great sign at the midpoint of the season. Our sprints group in particular were a highlight today with Soukhanya and D'Yhana running strong PRs in the 100, Our 4x1 had a strong outing as well."
Abi Caprye won the high jump, clearing a personal best five feet, three ¾ inches while
Sydney Sparks (fourth – 4' 11 ¾") and
Lilly Achterling (fifth- 4' 9 ¾") both finished inside the top five in the event.
Madison Downey was runner-up in the pole vault, clearing 10' 10" with teammate
Ki Neir fourth with a clearance of 10' 4". Downey also finished third in the triple jump (34' 7") and was fifth in the long jump (16' 7"). Neir also finished eighth in the javelin with a throw of 66' 7".
Kyleigh Archer was runner-up in the triple jump, leaping 34' 11" with
Kira Marshall finishing fifth in the event (33' 2") and sixth in the long jump (16' 6"). Both of Marshall's marks were personal best efforts.
In the throws,
Tajanai Huff was seventh in both the shot put (32' 11 ¼") and discus (119' 11") with the latter a personal best toss.
Addisen Hering was third in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 15.60 seconds with Achterling placing fourth in a personal record time of 15.96. Caprye was the third Lute in the top six, finishing in 16.38. Hering later finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:06.41) with Achterling eighth (1:11.22).
Soukhanya Waters placed fourth in the 100-meters, clocking a personal best time of 12.45 while
D'Yhana Clemons was one spot back in fifth with a personal best effort of 12.67. Waters also led the sprint crew in the 200-meters, boasting a personal record time of 26.53.
Maddie Mitchell ran a personal best time in the 800-meters, making two trips around the oval in 2:32.38.
Mariel Robles was eighth in the 5,000-meters, netting a personal best time of 19:55.43.
PLU's 4x100-meter relay was runner-up in 48.91 with the 4x400-meter relay team placing fifth in 4:19.78.
The Lutes finished second in the team standings behind Division I University of Washington, scoring 112 points and owning a seven-point gap on third place and Northwest Conference rival Whitworth University.
"We're a month out from conference so it's about continuing to work hard and letting the improvement come with each opportunity."
The Lutes hit the road next weekend, competing at the Linfield Invitational on April 3-4 in McMinnville, Oregon.
