Lutes 'Hatch' Up 2-1 Victory over Pioneers

PARKLAND - Karin Hatch scored the match-winning goal with less than nine minutes remaining as the Pacific Lutheran Lutes defeated the visiting Lewis & Clark Pioneers, 2-1, in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match played Sunday afternoon.

Karli Hurlbut provided the assist on the winning goal, drawing two defenders toward her and then passing to the unmarked Hatch who slotted the ball past goalkeeper Elise Delgado and into the left side of the goal at the 81:23 mark.

The tally was Hatch's third goal of the season and gave the Lutes (5-11-0 overall, 4-8-0 NWC) their second consecutive win, the first time this year that they have won back-to-back matches after Saturday's 7-2 win over Linfield.

PLU got on the board first at 15:05 when Jordan Daniels headed home a pass from Mimi Granlund. The play started with Courtney Walker's short corner to Granlund, who whipped a cross in from the right for Daniels to meet for her second goal of the season.

After playing almost 60 minutes without a shot, the visiting Pioneers finally found some rhythm on offense, and it paid off with a goal at 70:17. Maddie Harper stole the ball at midfield and hit a long pass to Katrina Weisbecker, who beat PLU keeper Lauren Chambard to tie the score. The goal was Weisbecker's second of the season, both coming against PLU.

Lewis & Clark continued to pressure the Lutes defense, but Hurlbut and Hatch combined on the other end for the winning goal shortly thereafter.

PLU owned advantages of 12-7 in shots and 9-1 in corner kicks. Chambard made one save for the Lutes and Delgado came up with six for the Pioneers.

The Lutes return to action at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday when they play NWC leader Puget Sound at Baker Stadium in Tacoma.
