ORANGE, Calif. - Pacific Lutheran shot just 31 percent from the
field, including 23 percent from three-point range, and as a result
came out on the short end of a 78-59 women's basketball decision to
Cal Lutheran on Friday night.
The game, played at Chapman University, featured a Cal Lutheran
team fresh off of an upset of defending national champion George
Fox. The Regals, 4-1 this season, took advantage of that
momentum against the Lutes, shooting 47 percent from beyond the
three-point line and 45 percent overall. Erica Whitley scored 14
points to lead a balanced scoring attack that saw five Cal Lutheran
players finish in double figures.
PLU fell behind 36-27 at the half but saw their shooting
accuracy dip to 30 percent in the final half, dooming any hope of a
comeback. Shelly Kilcup and Sarah Backstrom both scored 14 points
to lead the Lutes. Kilcup added six rebounds and Backstrom chipped
in with four assists. Tracy Goehri finished with nine points and
six rebounds.
The Lutes return to action tomorrow when they face the Chapman
Panthers in another non-conference contest.
