NEWBERG, Ore. - George Fox won its 11th consecutive game on
Saturday night, defeating the visiting Pacific Lutheran Lutes,
67-47, in a Northwest Conference women's basketball contest at
Wheeler Sports Center.
The Bruins, ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division III women's
basketball, scored the first eight points of the game and led by as
many as 33 points before settling for the 20-point victory. The
Bruins are 15-2 overall and hold down first place after the first
round of conference play with an 8-0 record.
The game was never in doubt after the Bruins opened up with the
first eight points, including including a pair of three-point
baskets by Keisha Gordon. George Fox led by as many as 29 points in
the first half before settling for a 40-13 halftime lead.
Pacific Lutheran sophomore guard Melissa Pixler heated up in the
second half, scoring 14 of her team-high 19 points in the final 20
minutes. She knocked down a total of five three-point field goals
in the game, four coming in the second half. No other PLU player
scored in double figures.
George Fox dominated in every area, particularly in rebounding
where it had a huge 52-25 edge. Meghan Dowling pulled down seven
boards to lead the Lutes in that category. Hannah Munger, a 6-5
freshman center, led all players with 14 rebounds and she also
collected six of the Bruins' 10 blocks.
Gordon scored 14 points and Munger and Arianna Mohsenian both
added 12 for the Bruins, who are the defending conference and NCAA
Division III national champions.
Pacific Lutheran, now 5-12 overall and 3-5 in the conference,
returns to action at 6 p.m. next Friday when it hosts the Linfield
Wildcats in Olson Auditorium.
