PORTLAND, Ore. – Katrina Weisbecker
scored her second goal of the day in the first overtime period to
give Lewis & Clark a 3-2 Northwest Conference women's soccer
win over visiting Pacific Lutheran on a windy and rainy Sunday
afternoon.
The win was the first in conference action for the Pioneers, now
1-10-1 in the NWC and 3-10-3 overall. With the loss, Pacific
Lutheran falls to 3-8-1 in the conference, tied for sixth, and
to 3-11-1 overall.
The Lutes finish the season with three of their final matches
coming at home, including a Wednesday afternoon contest against
conference-leading Puget Sound.
The heavy rain and strong wind did not stop Pacific Lutheran and
Lewis & Clark from an evely played match. Both teams seemed
poised for a victory from the start. PLU jumped out to an early
lead on a beautifully struck ball from the right side by Mimi
Granlund in the 10th minute. Granlund curled a ball from 20
yards out that found its way past goalkeeper Elise Delgado, off the
left post and into the back of the net for her third goal of the
season. Jordann
Gilmer picked up the assist.
The Pioneers would answer, however, as Katie Browning corralled
a loose ball off of an Emilia Emmetti corner kick. Browning turned
and fired from 18 yards out, over leaping PLU goalkeeper Lauren
Chambard and into the net. The half ended in a 1-1 tie.
The second half brought many scoring chances as both PLU and
Lewis & Clark attacked on offense. In the 63rd minute, the
Pioneers capitalized as Weisbecker hustled down a loose ball and
beat a PLU defender around the left side before scoring her first
goal of the match.
The Lutes responded only six minutes later. Karli Hurlbut faked a shot
and made a few excellent moves that allowed her to weave through
the Pioneer defense. She then placed a nice lob over Delgado to tie
the game at 2-2.
The second half ended in a 2-2 tie and the Pioneers wasted no
time in the first overtime period. In the fourth minute of overtime
Weisbecker scored again, faking left, cutting right, and chipping a
ball into the bottom right corner.
The Lutes outshot the Pioneers, 17-14, including 13-6 on
goal, but Delgado had a solid day with 11 saves for the
winners.
