FOREST GROVE- FOREST GROVE, Ore. - A goal scored by the host Pacific Boxers on a free kick with just six seconds remaining in the second overtime became a heartbreaker for the Pacific Lutheran Lutes on Sunday afternoon at Lincoln Park Stadium.
Jasem Jaihouni converted a free kick into the winning goal in a 2-1 Boxers win over the Lutes. Pacific (12-2-3 overall, 8-2-2 NWC) came into the day one point behind Pacific Lutheran (9-7-1, 8-4-0) in the Northwest Conference standings. The match was pegged as the showdown for first place in the conference and it proved to be a battle that came down to the final six seconds of the double overtime match.
With six seconds remaining on the clock, a foul was called and Jaihouni was awarded a free kick. His shot found the top of the net, just out of the reach of Lutes' goalkeeper Joe Rayburn, to end the match.
With the win, the Boxers now have 26 points in the conference standings compared to 24 for second-place PLU. Both teams have two matches remaining, including Sunday when PLU plays at George Fox and Pacific hosts Puget Sound. The Lutes, then, need help from either UPS or George Fox, the Boxers' remaining opponents, if they are to win the conference title.
Pacific Lutheran got on the board first when the conference's leading goal scorer, Chad Kearns, slipped the ball past Andrew Stevermer (to give the Lutes a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute. The Boxers knotted the score 10 minutes later when Kizamu Tsutakawa scored on a penalty kick. The score remained 1-1 until Jaihouni netted the match winner.
Pacific Lutheran outshot the Boxers 20-17, including 10-3 in shots on goal. After allowing the goal by Kearns, Stevermer made nine saves. Rayburn finished the contest with one save.
