Lutes Fall to Oxy in Battle of Regionally Ranked Foes

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - In a match featuring a pair of regionally ranked opponents, Occidental College won four of the six singles matches to rally for a 5-4 non-conference men's tennis win over the visitiing Pacific Lutheran Lutes.

The Lutes, now 8-8 this season, came into the match ranked No. 12 in NCAA Division III West Region tennis, while Occidental, 7-6 overall, is ranked No. 14.

PLU started well with a pair of doubles wins. Scott Sheldon and Michael Manser garnered an 8-3 win over Timothy Chang and Stephen Perkins at No. 2, and Brent Smooth and Taylor Dickey handled Ben Gilmore and Rod Bandeira by the same tally at No. 3.

Sheldon picked up one of PLU's singles wins with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Stefan Pastor in the No. 4 match, and Joel Trudel knocked off Chris Wan by a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) tally at No. 1. In what turned out to be the deciding singles match, Gilmore knocked off Justin Peterson, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, at No. 3.
